  1. What is acne?

Answer: Acne is a skin disorder caused by various factors such as bacterial infection, unhygienic environment and may have association with diet. The basic cause of acne is clogging of hair follicle.

  1. Is acne a contagious disease?

Answer: No. Mere physical contact with a person who had acne will not make you to suffer from acne. Though acne has bacterium but the bacterium develops under skin as such there is no possibility of contacting acne just by being around a person who has acne.

  1. Is acne hereditary?

Answer: Yes! There are proven results to say that acne can be inherited. If one or both parents have acne the possibility of their child getting acne increases. However, it is not necessary that a child born to parent having acne will surely have acne.

  1. Can acne prevented by washing face at regular intervals?

Answer: It is a myth that acne is caused due to dirt. In fact, dirt has got nothing to do with the occurrence of acne. On the other side frequent washing of face, specifically with oil based soaps and hard scrubs, can lead to dryness and damage to skin and may trigger acne.   1. Is acne associated with stress?

Answer: This is another myth about acne. It is a half truth. Stress can have its effect on hormonal levels and hence it can attribute to triggering of acne. On the other side, acne can cause stress owing to insightful appearance it gives to a person. However, stress can not play major role is occurrence of acne if treated properly.

  1. What is the possibility of getting acne during adulthood even if one has not suffered from acne during teenage?

Answer: Normally acne appears during adolescence and ends in early twenties. However, in some people acne may effect during their adulthood. It is not necessary that once you cross your adolescence without getting affected by acne means you will not get acne during adulthood. Cases of adult acne are more in females than that of men. Answer: Till date, there are no proven results available to establish role of diet in occurrence of acne. However, certain foods may worsen acne in certain people. If you have any such food, better avoid it.

  1. Does physical exercise affect acne?

Answer: Not exactly. In some people intense physical exercise may cause body heat up that could make you sweat more which may worsen acne. On the other hand, regular light warm up will help you to improve blood circulation and eliminating excessive sebum (oil) from skin. As sebum is one of the major factors associated with acne this will surely help you in preventing acne, of course, up-to certain extent.

  1. Does exposure to sun help in curing acne?

Answer: Exposure to sun may help you in curing acne by tanning. Some people feel that controlled exposure to son helped them in improving acne lesions. The other side of this aspect is that excessive exposure of sun can lead to damage of skin and damaged skin is a good ground for development of acne.   1. What is the best method of treating acne?

Answer: Everyone’s body has got different characteristic and hence requires different treatment. Acne is treated as per the individual’s health condition and type of acne he is suffering from. Your dermatologist will decide the best acne treatment for you.

  1. Can I use cosmetics even if I have acne?

Answer: Yes! But you should be cautious while selecting cosmetics. It is better to use non-comedogenic make up products and toiletries. There are number of cosmetics especially designed for acne sufferers. Always use water-based cosmetics instead of oil-based cosmetics. Certain cosmetics may cause irritation and damage skin (remember of acne cosmetica?) and even aggravate acne. Consulting a dermatologist would be better option for selecting cosmetics.

  1. What are the effects of squeezing pimples?

Answer: Never pop up or squeeze the pimples, specifically inflammatory one. Squeezing may result in piercing of clogged substances deeper into skin layers that can cause enhanced inflammation and may lead to scarring.

  1. What I should do with my acne scars?

Answer: Eliminating acne is the best way of preventing scars. Your dermatologist will advise on various medications/methods available for avoiding scarring or improving scars, if you already had it. Like acne treatment; acne scar treatment is also defer from one person to another. It is important to control occurrence of acne before treating scars.

  1. How fast acne medications work?

Answer: You will notice improvement in acne condition depending on the type of acne and treatment/medication you are using. In some cases the result will be evident within a week whereas in certain cases it may take longer periods such as month or two. Normally, doctors recommend acne treatment/medication for 4 to 8 weeks. Even if a particular medication/treatment does not give desired result, do not get discouraged. Consult your dermatologist. He will recommend you another medication that is suitable for you.

  1. Will overuse of medications help me in achieving early relief?

Answer: No! Use the medication as prescribed by the dermatologist. Overdose of medication may have side effects like follicular plugging, rashes/redness of skin and skin irritation. Means overdose will not benefit you but will add to your worries and may lead to other skin disorders.

  1. Does topical medication provide protection against acne occurrence other than areas affected by acne?

Answer: The main function of topical medications is to provide protection against acne in acne prone areas. Topical medications are used for avoiding the development of lesions before they surface. You must treat acne prone areas like cheek, nose, forehead, chin etc with topical medications.

  1. What should I do when my acne condition does not respond to acne treatment?

Answer: Acne medication may become ineffective if used for longer durations. This is so because the body creates resistance to the medication. This is the reason why dermatologist change or rotate your acne medication at frequent intervals.
